Holes

Holes

For the past two days we have been learning about a book called holes. We were not allowed to read the real book until we were done so the only way we could learn about this book was from some short clips. When we had learned enough we could make a google slideshow or google drawing about what we think the book will be about, I chose to make a google drawing. This is what I think the book will be about.

Elsie Locke Inquiry

Elsie Locke

For inquiry I chose to learn about famous woman who changed New Zealand for the better. We had to choose one person to learn more about, I chose Elsie Locke.

Elsie Locke is a brilliant woman who lived 1912-2001. She was a Writer, Environmentalist, Historian, Peace Activist, one-time Communitist, a Battler for Women’s rights and lots more.

I think that Elsie Locke is so amazing because she spent her life fighting for causes and peoples rights, mostly with just a pen.

Do you know how much of an amazing person Elsie is?

Determination

Determination

For the past week we have been learning about determination. Me, Addison and Isla made a song together based on determination, it was called Te Whakatau      (That is the maori word for determination) Here is what we came up with.

Te Whakatau

Determination is important! Only if you’re determined will you be successful.

Chorus

I mohio koe kei te pai, kia whakatau noa, no te mea he nui koe Did you know that it’s okay, just be determined, because you are great

Determination means your never going to give up determined

 Chorus

I mohio koe kei te pai, kia whakatau noa, no te mea he nui koe

Did you know that it’s okay, just be determined, because you are great!

Gummy Bears

Gummy Bears

The mouth watering sight catches my eyes, they are as colourful as a rainbow and as bright as sunbeams. The delectable bears taste of tropical fruits, the  gummy sculptures jiggle like fresh jelly and glisten in the mid-day sun. I spot a gigantic chubby yet sticky and scrumptious bear right in the middle of  the bunch, I can smell the sugar and fruity sent and it tells me “Just one Bite”  I slowly creep forward and reached to the bear, it felt squishy, squelchy and it made my mouth water, as I slowly attempted to put it in my mouth then it went “BOOM” and they were gone. I looked at the the table then spied a note it read ” Why oh why would you eat us?!”

Elsie Locke 1912-2001

Elsie Locke 1912-2001

Elsie Locke was a famous author and a fighter for many causes. Elsie was a activist who put a heap of energy and effort into attempting to make New Zealand a better place to live and be in.

In the year of 1930, Elsie became the very first student from the Waiuku District High School to go to university in Auckland. Her memoir “Student At The Gates” was about her experiences there throughout the Great Depression, which left thousands of people out of work.

With a degree in English, Elsie moved to Wellington in 1933. She lived there for 8 years and also helped found the family planning movement. She also edited a newspaper and a magazine both called “The Working Woman” She also helped set up another magazine this time called “Woman To-Day”

Elsie’s most successful book called “The Runaway” was her very first novel for children. That book was published in 1965 and it can even still be found in libraries and bookshops today! In 1999 that book won the Gaelyn Gordon “Much Loved Book” one of many awards that Elsie had won over her years of writing.

Elsie was 80 when her book “Two People, One land”  was published… This book was one of the first bicultural histories of New Zealand.

In mid 1940’s Elsie had to spend up to 2 years in hospital because she came down with spinal tuberculosis but she made the most of her time in hospital by writing letters, magazine articles, poems, radio talks and editing a book.

She made a really good impression to School Journal writer David Hill, he said ” I’m 6 feet tall, Elsie is… well less than 6 feet tall. So how come when we meet I always look up to her?” She also made a good impression to a former Green Party co-leader Rod Donald he said ” In many requests, she lived a very green lifestyle much more than I’ve ever done because it was a very simple and close to earth, with a small footprint.”

Elsie was certainly somebody to look up to.

Volume

Volume

Recently in maths we have been learning about volume. Today I completed a worksheet on my chromebook to find the volume of a shape. Here is my working.

6 Sentence Description Story

With snow white hair as crisp as ice it blows in the frosty air on the edge of the snowy mountain. Her crystal clear icy blue dress flows in the swaying wind. As she makes it to the very top she uses her extraordinary ice powers to create a magical and mythical ice tower that looks almost like a crystalised glacier.
